The stories we tell ourselves can either make or break us…that is how powerful the mind is…and that surely deserves my respect.

When I was a young girl, my grandmother would tell me bedtime stories.  She was great at it, so much detail and feeling would be put into her stories that it made them seem so very real to me.  However grand or trivial the story was, the bottom line is the fact that the story did put me to sleep…and that’s what stories do, they put us to sleep. In other words, when we are asleep, we’re not awake to the present moment, we are off somewhere in the mind daydreaming either about the past or the future.

It’s All in How You View It.

Becoming aware of the stories we tell ourselves is vital to our state of mental/emotional wellbeing.  It has a powerful direct affect on how we interact with the world around us. Telling stories doesn’t mean they’re wrong, it just means we’ve developed a mental narrative or interpretation based on past experiences.  It’s fascinating to me how two people can look at the same situation and have a totally different experience of it based on the story we’re telling ourselves about it.

Such is the power of perception.  I laugh, because I remember telling myself a story just last night of why my son didn’t call me back. I made up a story that he didn’t want to talk to me, because I probably said something in our last conversation that put him off.  When in fact (the truth/reality of it is) his cell phone ran out of battery, and he left a message for me from his friend’s cell phone which I did not bother to listen to till later on in the day. All that mental “bad-assing” to myself is what I tend to do…and it feels like a passive suicide.  My greatest gift to my self now is to immediately become aware of a story I’m telling myself, and let it go ASAP. It is my promise to myself, and I deserve it… we all deserve it.  We all deserve to experience life with an open heart and a mind free of preconceptions, such that we can truly enjoy and be present to the beauty and perfection of the present moment.
